All committed Christians express a strong desire to lead others to Jesus, but in order to do so we must first know him for ourselves. To know him we must see him and hear him but, if we are blind to the Gospel message, if we are blind to the needs and suffering of others, then we are also blind to the presence of Christ. We would make very poor guides indeed.

Jesus goes on to explain another kind of blindness: in this case, we are ready to point out the faults that we see in others but are blind to our own. Unless we can set an example, we cannot consider ourselves qualified to correct others.

Even in our human weakness, we can still strive for perfection. For God, our genuine desire is enough. All we need to do is to turn to Him, and He will give us the sight we need to walk in His ways and be a guide for others, that they too may eventually ‘see’.
