We celebrate today the sorrows of Our Lady. Celebrate sorrows? Yes! We celebrate her sharing in and union with the Passion of her Son. From the first moment of her ‘Yes’ to God, she submitted totally to His will and was unwavering in her resolve to follow it.

Like her Son who throughout His life ‘offered up prayer and entreaty aloud and in silent tears’ and who ‘learnt to obey through suffering’, Mary became the perfect disciple whom the Gospel portrays at the foot of the cross. Her perfectness lies in her steadfastness to her calling even in the midst of great suffering.

No wonder then, that Jesus gives her to the Church – represented by the disciple He loved – not just as a perfect disciple but as a MOTHER... as one who will guide, correct, protect, teach and nurture His church.
